Personal Statement: With both personal and professional experience in this field, I am especially pleased to have the opportunity to work with T.H.E. BRAIN TRUST. By establishing a community of those affected by brain disorders, we can improve access to health information and resources while providing much needed advocacy, assistance and encouragement. The possibilities of online support networks are especially meaningful to me, as a means of eliminating isolation (whether geographic or circumstantial) and reducing fear. Coping with a serious neurological diagnosis is challenging for anyone, whether they are patients, family members or caregivers. By communicating with others who share our unique concerns, we can strengthen one another and face these challenges together.

Personal Statement: In March 1998, while attending the National Brain Tumor Foundation conference in San Francisco, I met Samantha Scolamiero, a pioneer in Information Technology and Development designed for the express purpose of empowering Brain Tumor Survivors and their caregivers with information. At Samantha’s urging, I joined the BRAINTMR list in April 1998 and quickly discovered the opportunities that the list offered to exchange experience, information, hope and support. This became a life-altering experience for me, and allowed me to make something positive out of the horrible disease that has affected my daughter. The satisfaction of being able to offer hope and support to someone new on the BRAINTMR list, and reaching out to someone in that state of pure shock and bewilderment so common to brain tumor diagnosis, is as fulfilling as any human experience I have had. Samantha asked me to join the Board of Directors for T.H.E. BRAIN TRUST, and I am proud to work with the rest of the Directors to fulfill the mission of the organization – promoting and improving communication for all neurological disorders, particularly brain tumors.

Dr. Stephen B. Tatter, M.D., Ph.D. (Founding Director)

  • Assistant Professor of Surgery (Neurosurgery) Wake Forest University School of Medicine Founder of Massachusetts General Hospital Neurosurgery web pages with Chris Owen

Personal Statement: In an interview with Dr. Tatter, Samantha noted him observe that some doctors don't feel that the patient and family need to know all the details about their treatment and condition. They might argue that it's more important have a good doctor and treatment than information. Dr. Tatter has a broader vision. While a neurosurgical resident at the Massachusetts General Hospital he built some of the first web pages with neurosurgical information geared toward patients. At national conferences he networks with patients like Clare Patterson president of the Trigeminal Neuralgia Association (TNA) to help them learn about the benefits of communicating over the internet.

The TNA web page he created made national news as it helped a child from overseas find diagnosis and treatment in the US. However, good treatment, an excellent doctor, and accurate information isn't always enough he says, "Sometimes all you can do as a physician is be a witness to a patient's suffering or passage." It takes a very special person to make this kind of revelation about his role, that's why he was invited to serve on the Board of Directors of The Healing Exchange BRAIN TRUST. Our mission of communicating about the many levels of healing is already a natural part of his practice.
